All but the name has changed.
When Peugeot launched the first-generation 5008 a long, long time ago, it took the form of a smartly-designed, comfortable, and efficient people mover that could carry 7 people and their clutter off for a weekend. But such is the wave of SUVs that the 5008 has been reinvented from the ground up, retaining only that space and seating capacity, with every possible aspect otherwise getting a thorough lookover.
The result of that revision is what’s seen now, the high-riding SUV with the ‘5008’ badge on the rear. It’ll be made available on our market in just three trims, but generous kit levels no matter where you land in the range. Prices start at $42,990 for the entry-level Allure, before rising to GT-Line at $46,990. The three-prong range is capped with the GT, which starts at $52,990.
While it may be the most affordable 5008, the base Allure comes generously equipped with enough to tempt most family buyers. 18-inch alloys and LED daytime running lights come as standard, as do an 8.0-touchscreen infotainment display (with sat-nav), 12.3-inch digital meter cluster, DAB digital radio, keyless entry and go, semi-autonomous parking capability, 7-seats (with a 40:20:40 split second row), and rear sun blinds.
Intelligent safety features also get added, with the 5008 Allure coming with adaptive cruise control (with traffic-jam capability), autonomous emergency braking (with pedestrian detection), traffic-sign recognition, and lane-departure warning.
Move up to the GT-Line ($46,990) and atop of the Allure’s already generous kit-list, the mid-range 5008 adds on things like blind-spot monitoring, full-LED headlights with adaptive high-beam, lane-keeping aid (which actively steers you back into your lane should you wander), driver drowsiness sensor, a ‘Black Diamond’ paint finish for the roof, an electric tailgate, and a sporty front-bumper.
Both the Allure and GT-Line are powered by the same 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol mill as seen from the 308 hatch, which puts out a healthy 121kW and 240Nm, mated to six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels.
The flagship 5008 GT adds a whole host of kit, which we’ll get into starting with the mill up front. The GT model is the only 5008 to get a diesel mill, with a 2.0-litre 133kW/400Nm turbo-oiler up front, mated to the same gearbox and drivetrain combo as the other two models. But being the flagship, the 5008 adds niceties like 19-inch alloys, door and dash insets finished in Alcantara, electric adjustment for the two front seats (memory settings for the driver too), chrome door mirror caps, and more pronounced wheel arch extensions.
Early customers of the new 5008 will have the ‘Adventure Pack’ thrown in free-of-charge, which adds things like roof rails, rubber floor and boot mats, a net for the cargo, and a wind-deflector set.
