And Stuttgart’s celebrating its history.
Mercedes-Benz won’t deny that pop culture is one of the biggest reasons why its archaic G-Class SUV continues to command attention despite having been around for almost four decades. Having been revised only a handful of times since its debut in 1979 and never properly replaced, you can imagine that they’re quite excited to usher in an all-new G-Class, and that they’d celebrate that enormously.
If this video is anything to go by, our assumptions are right. The teaser, called ‘The Amber Cube,’ has one of the very earliest examples of the G-Class locked in (would you have guessed it) what appears to be an amber cube, suspended in time, a bit like how it feels to be behind the wheel of the outgoing model.
Where the G-Class has been revised a few times through its 39-year lifespan (though none being truly significant enough to differentiate it from preceding models in critical areas), January 15th will mark the debut of an all-new model, just the second generation of the nameplate, and we have little doubt that it’ll be very exciting. Thanks to the all-new architecture, the new G-Class will enjoy greater passenger space in every regard, with rear passengers most notably able to enjoy additional legroom of almost 6-inches.
We’ve also seen the cabin of the new G-Class, which Mercedes-Benz (rightfully) showed off early last month. The G-Class may have been built for the army (and it still is today), but the overhaul it’s received inside certainly puts its passenger focus into, uh, focus.
The 12.3-inch widescreen drivers display/infotainment screen is seen here, though there’s an option for old-school analogue dials too, with the whole thing sitting on a tiered dash that isn’t too dissimilar to what’s set to be found inside a new-generation A-Class.
There’s no denying that the new G-Class is a posh, luxurious place to be, more so than the last car, not that that stopped every other wealthy pop-culture celebrity from buying one. In any case, the revised interior will likely drive sales even further, since there’ll be less things to have to apologise for.
A wide range of engines, starting from a 4-pot turbodiesel and going all the way up to a biturbo V8, will also motivate sales in all the right ways, as well as the (alleged) inclusion of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system from the rest of the Merc range. A nine-speed automatic will do transmission duties, with power (obviously) going to all four wheels as standard.
