Little steps making it that much more compelling in class.

Greater options and improved value are the headlines from Hyundai as it upgrades its popular i30 hatch family. The biggest upgrades are to the powertrain and available intelligent safety features, which we’ll get to in a moment.

The i30 Elite and Premium now get the option of petrol motivation, where it was previously available only with a turbodiesel mill. The Elite & Premium petrol cars ($27,790 and $32,790 respectively) are now offered with the 2.0-litre GDi mill from the lower Go & Active models, and is so rated for 120kW of power and 203Nm. That engine, in the Elite & Premium guises, gets mated exclusively to a 6-speed torque-converter automatic.

Move up to the Premium and SR Premium models and you now bag a 7-speaker premium audio system by Infinity, offered as standard, while the Premium model gets LED taillights that used to be the reserve of the SR Premium. As such, the top-spec i30 SR Premium (least, before the i30N) gets a little price bump of $500 up to $34,490, while the i30 Premium diesel has gone up to $35,490, representing a $1500 price hike.

It’s not all focused on the higher-end variants though: Entry-level Go and second-step Active models now get a leather steering wheel and gear knob, and they also gain the option of a ‘SmartSense Pack’ (for an additional $1750) for automatic/double-clutch models.

Going for SmartSense will bag things like autonomous emergency braking, collision warning (forwards), blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep and lane-change assist, driver drowsiness alert, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, electric parking brake, and an upgraded 4.2-inch TFT information display nestled between the dials. Interestingly, the SmartSense pack will also add things like rear air vents, power-folding exterior mirrors (with LED indicators), as well as a chrome grille (to hide the radar module for the smart cruise control).
