Ford has debuted to the world the updated EcoSport compact SUV this week, at the Los Angeles motor show. This comes prior to a North American market launch, though we’ve had the Blue Oval’s smallest SUV on our shores for a good four years now.

Changes are limited to the cosmetic though, with bigger headlights and a redesigned grille, dealing with the latter’s ‘stacked’ appearance previously. The foglights now adopt a triangular design too, and new bumper wraps up the changes. The profile and rear of the EcoSport remain, for the most part, untouched.

Ford thought it prudent to focus its time and efforts on the interior of the EcoSport. The carryover cabin from the Fiesta is gone, and in its place is a new centre console design replete with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. That screen is powered by Ford’s Sync3 system, which builds in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, along with proprietary Ford applications.

Under the bonnet, there are two engine options for the US market: The characteristic 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder, or a 2.0-litre four cylinder, both consuming petrol. Both engines are paired to a six-speed automatic, with the 2.0-litre benefitting from four wheel drive.

Of special note is the B&O Play audio package offered with the Titanium-spec car there, which also throws in satellite radio. Overall, 10 exterior colour options are available, as well as 7 ambient lighting selections.

Back home, the updated EcoSport will be landing on our shores sometime next year, with a tighter introduction window to be announced in due course. There’s a lot riding on the little SUV, with sales of the EcoSport at a disappointing 98 sales for October, whilst competitors outdo it hand over fist.
