One engine and one trim, taking on one competitor?
Without any official word through the usual channels, Volvo Australia has quietly introduced the prices and specifications of its new V90 CrossCountry estate-crossover on its website, with prices indicated to be around the $110,000 mark drive-away.
To illicit an indicative price, we had to input a postcode, and the responses we received all fell around $110,000. This puts the incoming V90 CrossCountry in direct contention with the only other high-riding estate car on our shores, the Audi A6 Allroad, which retails for $112,855 (before ORCs). Like the Audi, the V90 CrossCountry is also being offered in one trim level, Inscription, powered by a sole D5 diesel engine.
The D5 turbodiesel is a familiar unit, being seen before in other Series-90 cars. It puts out a not-inconsiderable 173kW and 480Nm from its diminutive 2.0-litre four cylinders, going through a standard-fit eight-speed automatic gearbox. Standard kit is generous on the V90 CrossCountry, with adaptive-LED headlights, 19-inch wheels, four-zone climate control, Nappa leather interior trim, a 12.3-inch Sensus display, electric front seats and a powered tailgate all featuring, among others.
Safety is stellar in this Volvo, as expected. There’s smart cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, all-round parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts, hill descent & start assistance, and rear cross-traffic alert. The V90 CrossCountry should see PilotAssist semi-autonomous driving capabilities as well, which are an absolute boon in traffic.
The V90 CrossCountry is expected to make its official debut toward the middle of the year, though with this ‘teaser’ already online, we reckon it might make it to showrooms sooner rather than later.
