Updated full-sized bruiser finally on sale, upgraded for new model year.
The revised 2017 Nissan Pathfinder has finally arrived in showrooms, with interested customers finally able to take one home. The big seven-seater SUV has seen a raft of updates for the new model year, both mechanical and aesthetic, keeping it bang up to date against a raft of rivals.
The Pathfinder continues to offer two- and four-wheel drive configurations, along with the supercharged four-cylinder Pathfinder Hybrid carried over with no drivetrain changes. Prices have also stayed as they are, though base-model ST 2WD cars now command a negligible $500 more, now at $41,990 (before ORCs).
All cars benefit from a third-generation ‘XTronic’ CVT gearbox, which even offers ‘D-Step’ logic control that imitates a regular stepped-transmission experience under heavy acceleration. The suspension setup has also seen revisions to see better body control and a quicker steering response, ensuring that the big Nissan never feels like a barge to steer.
For 2017, the Pathfinder gains a whole ton of safety gear to keep up with category standards. There are things like rear-cross traffic alert, 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, but only on ST-L and Ti models (mid- and top-spec), with the base ST missing out on even AEB. The ST gets a bunch of other things as standard to soften the blow though, like 18-inch alloys, 8-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system, mirror-mounted indicators, and LED daytime running lights.
The top-shelf TI models get two screens to amuse second-row passengers, replete with wireless headphones, while there’s a powered-tailgate with a gesture-activated opening function. The Ti runs on 20-inch alloys, and gets new auto-levelling LED headlights.
