The E63 range-topper available in hot and hotter for Australia.

2017 Mercedes-AMG E63, E63 S Detailed

The Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S are on track for an Australian debut, with the hotter S due in June and the lesser E63 bound for a December reveal. First seen in October 2016, the E63 duo have managed to beat the new-generation BMW M5 and Audi RS6 to market.

The AMG E-Class will be offered with all-wheel drive as standard, in E63 4Matic+ and E63 S 4Matic+ guises, with prices set at $209,900 and $239,900 (before ORCs). This will see an enormous $50,000 step-up to the performance heroes from the entry-level AMG E-Class, the E43, but we doubt that’ll hamper sales.

Jumping up to the E63 model will bag you a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 motor, offering 420kW and 750Nm, while the S model gets an astronomical 450kW & 850Nm. Both tunes are matched with an AMG SpeedShift nine-speed multi-clutch automatic, which sends power to all four wheels via an enhanced 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. The century sprint is completed in just 3.5-seconds for the E63, with the hotter S able to do the same sprint in just 3.4-seconds.

Keeping an eye on fuel bills, the E63 and E63 S feature cylinder deactivation to help it achieve its ambitious 9.3L/100km claimed fuel consumption figure, along with a ‘Drift Mode’ in the E63 S for ultimate hooliganism. Air-suspension features here, with a three-chamber air-spring system that’s been tuned to offer better driver involvement and sped. Other kit on the E63 includes a mechanical limited-slip rear differential, tri-zone climate control, chrome exterior trim and 20-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels.

Stepping up to the E63 S will see things like an electronic rear LSD, active dynamic engine mounts, AMG Performance adjustable exhausts, 20-inch cross-spoke forged alloy wheels in matt-black, and AMG Night Package for the exterior, red brake callipers, AMG performance seats, nappa-leather instrument panel and door belt line trims, a digital TV tuner, and wireless phone charging.

If you need more kit, $18,900 will net you ‘Designo’ Selenite Grey Magno paint, ceramic brakes, AMG side graphics finished in matte, AMG Exclusive nappa-leather seats with contrast stitching in yellow, a Dynamic microfibre steering wheel with more yellow stitching, carbon fibre in selected trim pieces, and more yellow highlights. They like yellow.
