Toyota’s RAV4 mid-size SUV has recently been through the gauntlet of safety tests from ANCAP and has emerged, perhaps unsurprisingly, with a full 5 stars to its name.
It’s no shocker because, although this facelifted 2016 version was only recently introduced in Australia and New Zealand, this is pretty much the same fourth-generation model that first came into production reality in 2013. Structurally, it is a sound as ever; although now equipped with more active safety features that there was in its debut form.
Toyota’s typically have always been safe cars. While not being a byword for introducing the latest and greatest safety technologies, the Japanese marque is not wanting in 5-star ratings for all it cars.
This is reflected in the RAV4’s individual test scores. It features dual frontal as well as side, head, and knee airbags and took a 13.56 out of a maximum of 16 points in the frontal offset impact test and a full 16 out of 16 for side impact.
Factoring in the standard features in all the variants up for sale as well as rating its safety towards accidents involving pedestrian, ANCAP gave the 2016 Toyota RAV4 an overall score of 34.56 out of a maximum of 36 points.
For this models, Autonomous Emergency Braking - a key modern safety feature - and lane keep assist is made standard in the higher-spec Cruiser variants but can be fitted to the GX and GXL as part of an optional technology pack.
