Subaru’s latest WRX has broken cover at the Los Angeles Auto Show, debuting a WRX-first in the form of a CVT automatic transmission complete with eight-speed manual mode.
But rest assured WRX fans, the newcomer also comes with a six-speed manual transmission.
Under the bonnet is a new 2.0-litre, direct injection Boxer engine delivering 199kW at 5600rpm and 349Nm from 2000 to 5200rpm. This is the first time Subaru’s DIT Boxer engine has been pared with a six-speed manual transmission.
Subaru says the latest WRX tips the scales lighter than its predecessor and both body and chassis are significantly stiffer. And underneath are multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), Active Torque Vectoring and electric power steering.
The wheelbase has grown by 25mm to provide more rear seat legroom, the A-pillar shifts 200mm forwards, a new quarter window has been added, dashboard and window sills are lower and the exterior mirrors are now mounted on the body. As well, the door opening dimensions are larger and a 60:40 split-fold rear seat provides load-carrying versatility.
At the front, Subaru’s traditional hexagonal grille remains but there’s a new look punctuated by new hawkeye shaped headlights – all-up the latest WRX looks lower and meaner.
The rear sees a new bumper/diffucer design, a small rear spoiler and new, thinner tail-lights.
New design wheels measure 17x8, are finished in gun metal and are stiffer and lighter than the previous model.
Inside, the latest Subaru WRX debuts a ‘D’-shaped sports steering wheel, carbon and metal trim accents, a new 3.5-inch LCD display screen and a boost pressure display screen for the multi-function display. Audio is a Harman/Kardon system.
