Australian buyers will have to wait around 12 months to get their hands on a new Audi RS 4 Avant which has just been unveiled in Europe.
The third generation of Audi’s classic wagon-with-a-punch, the latest RS 4 Avant employs Audi’s naturally-aspirated 4.2-litre V8 engine (as fitted to the RS 5 Coupe). This screamer delivers maximum power of 331kW at 8,250rpm (no, that’s not a typo!) and peak torque of 430Nm between 4000 and 6000rpm.
Audi’s 4.2-litre FSI powerplant is hand-assembled at its plant in Gyor, Hungary and is identified by its red-painted cylinder-head covers. The V8 drives all four wheels via a seven-speed S tronic transmission and Quattro all-wheel-drive system…acceleration from zero to 100km/h takes a measly 4.7 seconds.
Underneath is an RS-specification suspension (five-link front/trapezoidal link rear) with many components made from light-weight aluminium. The Audi RS 4 Avant is thus tauter, sits 20mm lower and rides on beautiful 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch optional).
Ride/handling is variable thanks to Audi Drive Select and dynamic steering. Sports Suspension Plus with Dynamic Ride Control is on the options list.
External styling changes alert to the performance potential of the Audi RS 4 Avant. The front grille gets a matte aluminium look with honeycombe insert, there are larger air uintakes and wedge-shaped xenon plus headlights with LED DRLs and a racy front splitter to assist aerodynamics.
From the side, there is a hint of the 1980 Audi Quattro with rear flared wheel arches running an squared upper edge. Front wheel arches are also flared and there are chiseled side sills.
The rear scores the expected spprts exhaust, air diffuser and unique bumpers.
Inside, Audi trims the RS 4 Avant in sporty black hues – including carbon and piano black inlays (brushed aluminium is optional). Standard sports seats with integrated head restraints are trimmed in black leather and Alcantara (Nappa leather is optional and includes extra colours Moon Silver and Stone Grey).
Instruments are the very best RS designs and include a lap timer.
Audi Australia will announce more details on the RS 4 Avant closer to launch.
