Volkswagen’s acclaimed first ute, the Amarok, scores new petrol and diesel engines and available cab-chassis for 2012 but still no automatic transmission – for now.
The new diesel is impressive on two counts – handy 340Nm of torque from 1750-2250rpm and at 7.4l/100kms is the most fuel-efficient Amarok.
On the petrol front, Volkswagen Amarok scores the supercharged TSI300 2.0-litre with 118kW/300Nm and fuel consumption of 9.6l/100kms.
Drive is via a six-speed manual transmission.
The cab chassis is available in both entry-level and ‘Trendline’ model grades and allows greater versatility for ute operators like tradies.
Other improvements for 2012 include DRLs for all models, heated seats and a multi-function steering wheel for range-topping ‘Ultimate’ grade. Mid-spec ‘Highline’ and also gets the new tiller (it’s optional on entry-level and ‘Trendline’).
Prices start at $29,990.
