As well as its global ST performance car launch, Ford used the Frankfurt Motor Show to confirm a new turbocharged three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine for European Focus models.
Ford says the new engine will, in time, be launched in other global markets.
Available in 74kW and 88kW versions with torque up to 170Nm, driving through five-speed and six-speed manual transmissions, Ford says the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder delivers the performance of a conventional 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine but with considerably less fuel consumption and emissions (C02 less than 120g/km).
The new engine was developed in the UK at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre and runs direct injection and a new, compact turbocharger capable of spinning up to 250,000rpm for reduced turbo lag. There is also an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head (lowers the temperature of exhaust gases) and a ‘split cooling system’ which warms things up faster.
Focus models with the new three-cylinder engine will be available with other fuel-saving technology such as Auto Start/Stop, Active Grille Shutter and Regenerative Charging.
