BMW’s second generation X3 compact SUV with more interior space, better looks and extra technology goes on-sale locally early next year.

Just launched in the Northern Hemisphere the new lineup does not include the current six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. However both the X3 xDrive20d diesel and X3 xDrive35i petrol enjoy extra performance.

The entry-model X3 xDrive20d 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel will deliver 135kW/380Nm while the X3 xDrive35i, 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol will be good for 225kW/400Nm. BMW says fuel consumption for the diesel is rated at 5.6l/100kms while the petrol X3 returns 8.8l/100kms.

Both models drive all four wheels via BMW’s superb eight-speed automatic transmission (the 2.0-litre is available with a six-speed manual) and for the first time, the X3 xDrive35i comes with fuel-saving Auto Start/Stop.

Towing capacity is up to an impressive 2,400kgs.

Underneath, the new X3 gains electric power steering and optional Dynamic Damper Control.

Inside the new X3 takes a major step forward over the current model with more space and more luxury. Included in the overseas models are a Head-Up Display (HUD), the outstanding four-camera Top-View system and a reversing camera.

BMW says the luggage volume has been boosted to 550 litres with the rear seat in place or, with the seat folded, a handy 1,600 litres.

Externally, while an evolution of the current models looks, the new X3 is altogether more rounded and elegant. It’s much bigger too - 4,648mm long, 1,881mm wide and 1,661mm high.

The new X3 is manufactured at BMW’s North American plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. BMW’s X5 and X6 models are also sourced from Spartanburg.

BMW Group Australia will announce Australian specifications and pricing for the new X3 range early in 2011.
