Volvo’s new S60 range has been boosted by a new lineup of sporty R-Design variants and a new entry-level T5 model ($51,950) powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine.
S60 R-Design is available for the front-wheel-drive T5 and all-wheel-drive T6 with its turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine.
The R-Design models boast a sporty chassis set-up with a stiffening under-bonnet strut brace, monotube rear dampers which are 20 per cent stiffer, 15 per cent siffer springs and anti-roll bars and ride height reduced by 15mm.
Externally, R-Design S60 models boast a new front apron with a glossy black grille, larger intakes for the rear diffuser and five-spoke 18-inch wheels.
Inside, there’s sports seats in R-Design leaher, sports leather wrapped steering wheel and gear lever plus sports instrumentation and R-Design floor mats.
The big news under the bonnet is the debut of Volvo’s new generation GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct injection) 2.0-litre engine. An all-aluminium design which complies with Euro5 emissions regulations, the 2.0-litre delivers a handy 177kW/320Nm while returning average fuel consumption of 8.3l/100kms.
Volvo says the new engine debuts world-first sheet steel construction (others are cast iron). This allows a more compact overall dimension.
