Ford has confirmed a new investment of $103 million in its Australian operations which secures the locally-manufactured Falcon and Territory models to at least 2016-17.
The announcement was made at the Detroit Auto Show by Ford Asia-Pacific boss Joe Hinrichs, Ford Australia CEO Bob Graziano and Federal Minister for Manufacturing, Senator Kim Carr. The funding includes $34 million from the Federal Government’s existing New Car Plan and some support from the Victorian government.
While the details were announced in Detroit, it’s great news year news for Ford’s manufacturing teams in Geelong and Broadmeadows, Victoria plus supplier companies and dealers throughout Australia.
“Ford Australia’s $103 investment in the design, engineering and manufacture of Falcon and Territory from 2014 continues our focus on providing vehicles with enhanced environmental performance in every segment in which we compete,” Mr Graziano said. “There’s no doubt the large car segment is challenging, but it can remain viable if we continue to provide buyers what they want – fuel efficiency, design excellence, and features that enhance safety and the driving experience.”
Ford say upcoming initiatives including improved body aerodynamics, low rolling-resistance tyres and anew six-speed automatic transmission will reduce Falcon’s CO2 footprint by 5.3 per cent.
