This actually took a longer time than we were expecting, but later late than never. It’s been roughly two years since the launch of the second-generation Audi R8, but we suppose the cry for a more powerful drop top version wasn’t all that shrill.

And that’s basically what that is, a convertible version of the R8 V10 Plus or the faster, more powerful sibling of the standard R8 V10 Spyder. Specifically, it’s 5.2-litre naturally aspirated engine produces roughly 50kW and 20Nm more (same a the coupe), and now buyers will get to experience all that fury behind them out in the open.

“The Audi R8 Spyder V10 plus completes the R8 model line,” said Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. “The Spyder is now also available as a 610PS top version in addition to the Coupé. It benefits from our many years of experience in motorsport and combines breath-taking dynamics with the emotion of an open-top sports car.”

The V10 engine is really the star of the show here, which is impressive considering how much technology is stuffed into this car. With 449kW and 560Nm driving all four-wheels through an S tronic dual-clutch transmission, the Spyder V10 Plus can launch itself to 100km/h from rest in 3.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 327km/h.

The new R8 is an overall lighter car than the original version, but despite the 25kg drop from the previous V10 Spyder, this car still weighs 1,587kg (dry), or roughly 30kg more than the coupe. However, its sister car from Audi subsidiary Lamborghini, the Huracan Spyder, is lighter still by over 160kg, and so is the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

Over the standard R8 Spyder V10, the Plus receives some visual changes as standard. Carbon fibre (reinforced polymer) is used to construct the sideblades, sill trim, and fixed rear spoiler. Meanwhile, there are quad gloss black trapezoidal exhaust pipes flanking a carbon diffuser. Also standard are carbon bucket seats and ceramic brakes.
